Almondvale announces fundraising partner

Date: 1 Apr 2007

Marie Curie Cancer Care is to benefit from a cash boost as Livingston’s Almondvale Shopping Centre pledges to raise money for the charity throughout the next financial year.

The shopping centre has embarked on a year-long calendar of free events for shoppers which kicked off on March 31 with a 16-day Easter Gala that raised £3,138. Visitors were encouraged to offer donations in return for participating in events which included a treasure trail, bouncy castles, face painting, hook a duck, coconut shy and the search for an Almondvale Gala King and Queen.

This event was the first in a 12 month programme of activity which is designed to enhance community relations and maintain footfall during the development work. Other forthcoming events include the Livingston Flower Show in May, Celebration of Football in October and the January Gold Rush next year amongst others.

Almondvale Shopping Centre Marketing Manager, Jennifer Bruce, said:  “Marie Curie Cancer Care does a tremendous job in the community and touches the lives of many.  Unfortunately cancer is an illness which affects the majority of Scottish people whether they themselves are sufferers, or it is a member of their family, a friend or colleague.

“We are delighted to be raising money for this worthwhile cause and are eager to help the charity continue its fantastic work.”

Marie Curie Cancer Care is a free, high quality nursing service offered to those with terminal cancer.   Patients can be treated in one of the 10 hospices nationwide or, as is increasingly common, they can be treated at home, surrounded by their families and loved ones.

It costs £160 for a night shift of a Marie Curie Nurse at the bedside of a patient at home and around £9,000 per day to run the Marie Curie Hospice in Edinburgh. It is anticipated that the contribution from Almondvale Shopping Centre will provide great benefit to the charity and its work in the local area.

Fiona Bushby, Community Fundraising Manager for Edinburgh and the Lothian’s, said:  “As a charity we rely on the goodwill of organisations and individuals in order to ensure our continuing work in the community.  We are grateful to Almondvale Shopping Centre and appreciate their fundraising efforts on our behalf.”
